We hold a number of events throughout the badminton year
(last year's date in []). These include:
Club AGM - Early in the season during one of our Club Nights
(24 March 2011).
Your chance to have some input into fees and events. Volunteers for committee or desk duty are welcomed.
Pub Night - often early in the season
Can be at a variety of localities around Wellington. We normally turn up from 5pm for drinks and conversation, followed by dinner in town.
Teams Tournament - can be any Thursday during the season
- [18 June 2009].
Around 8pm we divide all players into teams of about six, and have a tournament - several matches of about 15 minutes, broken into about four sections. Team captains select who plays when, though each player must play in each match. The tournament controller randomly determines how long each section will be to keep you guessing.
We have prize giving and supper upstairs about 9.30.
Please bring a plate for supper.
Yankee Tournament - can be any Thursday during the season
A Yankee tournament is a very casual competition. Players at club on the night are put together in doubles or mixed pairs on court. Games are played for 12 to 15 minutes and at the end each player tells the organisers what their pair scored. At the end of the night, there is a prize giving and social event with prizes handed out for a mixture of different reasons. If you are looking for a good fun night of Badminton with a little amount of competition come along and have a go.
Handicap Championships - [3 July 2010].
All players are assigned a handicap so that they have an equal chance of winning the tournament. Some of the better players can start on minus 40 points, whereas if you are a beginner you might start on plus 15 points. The games are timed as well, and whoever is ahead after 10 minutes or gets to 21 points first is the winner. This tournament is the most fun of the year, as absolutely anyone can win (and you get to hear A graders complaining about their punitive handicaps).
Club Championships - [12 September 2009]
This club tournament takes place on a Saturday, normally from 9am to 4pm, and is a serious competition to find the top players in the club. There are singles, men's and women's doubles, and mixed doubles. The tournament is split into two groups, A and B graders in one group, C and D graders and beginners in the other group.
We usually head out for a meal together in the evening, partners are always welcome.
